With the Zoning Board Meeting set for March 16th we are trying to collect names to show the board the level of support for keeping Boxwood Hall located at 65 Haddon Ave. in Haddonfield, and it grounds preserved for future generations. Please take a moment to read the petition and add your name if you feel compelled. You can also subscribe to weekly digest updates to stay informed on all things that matter to Haddonfield and its future by going to the home page of this web site and clicking the “keep informed” box and giving your email……

I agree that the grounds of Boxwood Hall should not be turned into high
density housing. The property is historic - and should be protected and not
divided from it's land. This rare 18th century property has links to
Haddonfield's founders, the science community and is a very important part
of Haddonfield's story. Haddonfield is a very special place, and if we put
high density housing in the backyard of one of our most important
structures, we will lose more than just the land the property sits on, we
will lose our integrity.
Your email address will not appear on the site. Also, please fill in Street and town only if you are comfortable. You will receive an email that you must confirm to have your signature viewed on the web site......

Our town should be focussed on preserving any remaining open areas. The character of our town is rapidly disappearing due to inappropriate development and even more dreadful plans are looming in the future. Haddonfield is a beautful and unique community. It deserves to be preserved.
Josephine Meidt, Kings Highway, Haddonfield
It is important for the character of our community to limit high density development.

You only have to look to a place like South Beach to show that preservation of architecture and of our history is key to the revitalization of a community. Architectural integrity is an important ingredient in the make up of our town. It must be maintained.

Andrew Holtz, Westminster , Haddonfield

We moved to Haddonfield because there isn't another town like it. Let's keep it unique and historic and not turn it into your average town that lacks good planning. Boxwood Hall should be that LAST place considered for high density housing. There are so many architectural treasures and very few open spaces. This town needs protection.

Marie Bellu, 834 Wayside Lane , Haddonfield
You would be absolutely crazy to put this type of housing in that space - we have a a trying and congested traffic situation as it is - to do this would seriously affect quality of life in this town for all. Dead set against it. The schools will suffer also.
Emma Fowler, Walnut Street, Haddonfield
Jerelyn Ablonczy, 100 Colonial Ave., Haddonfield
The area behind Boxwood Hall is so beautiful in the springtime with tiny white flowers in bloom all over the ground. I am struggling to understand how high density housing brings any value to Haddonfield or to the potential residents of the housing. It is already extremely difficult getting around the Haddon Ave./Lake St./Colonial Ave. areas at rush hour or at any time of day. Traffic is backed up at every intersection and getting into some of our side streets is extremely difficult. Please do not build there!

Boxwood Hall should be protected not only for its historic building that occupies the unique and rare open space left in Haddonfield but also for the impact that such development would have in an already congested and compact area. The residence adjacent to this property would be greatly impacted by the increase in traffic.

As noted by others, we do not need 30 plus townhouses in our town. Lake St.and the other streets in that area already have plenty of water and sewer problems. There are no, absolutely no, advantages to building on that piece of ground. Are we protecting our planet by building on every open space? I think not. Think about what we are doing to our water table and what we are bequeathing to our children and grandchildren.

Boxwood is a Haddonfield and Camden County treasure. I feel that it is my duty, as a citizen and protector of history/open space that this property by saved. High density housing, on Lake Street is not part of the Haddonfield plan and all Boards should adhere to the guidelines that our town committees/boards have worked hours on to preserve.

Please stop and think! What would be the benefit of building high density housing behind Boxwood Hall? This is historic property in a very small historic town. I am totally against this shameless proposal. I live a few blocks from it and hope it is halted. It clearly will directly impact our immediate neighborhood which already is over run by traffic issues and the maniac car culture. Walking to the PATCO from my home can be a nightmare due to speeding cars and uncaring and rude drivers. Even kids in strollers don't stop these nitwits. I cannot imagine 4 buildings on one lot. The drainage is overburdened now. When we have heavy rains we end up with water from Haddon Ave., Tanner St., 89, 75, 65 Haddon Ave.
Some new comers failed to realize that there are 2 streams piped under ground. 89 Haddon was built in early 1960's on wetlands.
Our underground support mainly the sewer system is over burdened and periodically flows back into the lines around the area.
We enjoy having a view, watching families sled over at friends cemetery, kids playing at the school playground and the wooded area behind us.
If this building is allowed this would all be lost.
I agree that this property needs to be preserved to keep the integrity of the community.

This is not an appropriate location for a multi-dwelling unit building and the resulting congestion. The site is adjacent to 2 elementary schools and near a third elementary school. The Borough should be encouraging projects and open space which decrease congestion and make our streets safer for our kids, rather than varying existing zoning law to accommodate the narrow financial interests of a developer.

HFS, the meeting house, the graveyard, the library and Boxwood Hall are all at 'ground zero' in the heart of the
Haddonfield I grew up in and played and learned in as a child. Slowly the changes have eaten away at the perimeter. The faux colonial revival insurance building
across the street, the ugly parking lots, the high speed
line which dug a deep scar through the upper section of
town. The town too has become a way station for the upwardly mobile educating therr kids while they pay high taxes then leaving.Sadly one of the town's residential groups has become lawyers with my grandfather's house with its beautiful garden then ruined by several of this breed.
Haddonfield is a place that was founded by my direct ancestors and it stands as a vision of what they sought in the new world. Unfortunately, and metaphorically speaking sometimes literally, they built too close to the road and those who came after in many senses are in too much of a hurry or uncaring, sometimes even resentful, to preserve what they themselves did not create. They like what the old families built, don't get me wrong. But it's a stage set for them and they want to figure out how to exploit it and degrade it, so they don't have to face the evidence of their own rootlessness and malignancy.
At this point I do see though that the last best chance of saving what's left from these moneygrubbing carpetbaggers with their oily scheming lawyers and their cheap plans is to organize and fight back with everything that we have. Otherwise, we'll also have to blame ourselves for own inaction.Without having heard any direct voices mind you, I believe that generations
of my forebears would stand up and cheer for those who seek to preserve our collective heritage. Without our history, we should also realize, we and our descendents will truly have no roots and others will seek to write
their "narratives."

Saving Boxwood Hall is more important to our Community than any level of development. Isn't this site protected by the State's Historic Preservation Office?
If we destroy our heritage, we'll never recreate it, and we'll condemn ourselves to our own ignorance of our past while staring at our iPods and 100 inch television sets.
Real people settled this town before it was part of America, before buildings were erected with anything other than sweat and muscle, even before the enlightened acts of Emancipation, Suffrage, and Equality. We still have much to learn from all of their struggles.
There are other areas in town where development would not only be suitable, but welcome. I've shared a plan with Commissioner Borden that would take one such area and combine a new Library with residential housing, offering a net increase in ratables and better community facilities.
While property owners have rights, in many areas of Haddonfield such rights have become secondary to that of historic preservation and we all see the good that results from it. I encourage the leaders in Haddonfield to work with the applicant to find a much more appropriate site for their development while preserving what can not be replaced.
Please count on my support to prevent this development from happening.

As a lifelong resident of Haddonfield who is very familiar with the Boxwood Hall area I feel it would be most inappropriate to add to the density of the area. Don't let greed get in the way of doing the right thing. Let it be and find an alternative use for Boxwood Hall such as using it as annex to the library for a senior center or teen center and use Lake Street Cottage as a place for the various town committtees to meet. The grounds are beautiful as well and perfectly suited for the library's annual book sale, story telling, bird watching, etc. Embrace this historical treasure and what it has to offer rather than develop it.
Chris Wolfe, 206 Redman Ave., Haddonfield
Adding high density traffic that accompanies high density housing to one of the more congested locations in town is not what I call intelligent planning. Adding this traffic to one of the more congested areas that is also adjacent to two destinations for young children (Friends School and the library) borders on idiocy.
I also find it ironic and somewhat sad that we continue to sell Haddonfield as a "historic" town while simultaneously allowing the destruction truly historic buildings.

The appearance of Haddonfield, the balance of open space vs. developable land in Haddonfield, and the municipal infrastructure all will be eroded by the proposed Estaugh Commons development project at Boxwood Hall.
Camden County history has demonstrated over and over again that construction projects in general, and over-construction in particular, often are not progress and in fact have fostered blight, plummeting property values and have exhausted open space. All communities need open space to remain viable and livable. Greed and short-term financial gain are not components of intelligent town planning and well-managed economic development.
The goal of the Estaugh Commons Development team is not to help Haddonfield. The goal of the Estaugh Commons Development team is to make money at the expense of Haddonfield.

I think it is a disgrace to anyone who even considers developing the Boxwood Hall site. It is the rare buildings such as this that makes our town such a unique, Norman Rockwell type setting. Our town has nothing to gain by developing this site for high density housing and will only further burden our limited resources within town. Perhaps we should use our "green acres" money to purchase the site and use this location for additional library space.
